There is a lot more cheap tea in the international tea market than expensive higher quality tea. This especially true of the Tea Market in the United States. When looking for higher quality organic loose leaf tea, understand there is a supply and demand issue.
If you have no reputation or established tea brand the purchasing rare, expensive herbs or higher quality organic loose leaf tea is going to get expensive. DISCLAIMER: sometimes the best quality isn't always organic.
Fortunately it is not expensive to buy common and lower quality teas and herbs in bulk. It's expensive to buy high quality in bulk. When you start buying tea it is important to have open communication with your wholesaler. TRADE SECRET: if your wholesaler does not care to talk to you or listen to what you want then you are likely not important and you'll have to build up a reputation of being able to move tea.
It is less important they know the tea you want but rather how much you want. If you want something very similar, a few grades lower, you can get the same quality tea. Arguably the same types of tea can be for less expensive.
How much time does it take to get your tea delivered if the tea is already in the states? If it's already in your local region, then it's not going to be very expensive. But if you want to buy a rare tea or herb then you will need to work with a wholesaler who has a broker license to import ingredients that are not easily kept in stock. This can take 3 to 4 weeks. If you're not in a rush, it could take six weeks to maybe even 3 months to get special teas and herbs. In short, it is a list of logistic challenges.
When it comes to buying tea in bulk, it's much better to just buy teas and herbs you have easy access to. Why? From an importer's perspective, they would rather sell the tea that they have right now in their warehouse than bring more tea and then have the tea that they have stocked up. TRADE SECRET: bulk wholesale business runs on supply and demand.
Not every tea importer, exporter, or manufacturer likes to go quickly. Many people in the tea industry are very calm, relaxed, and they're not in a rush to get you your specialty tea, especially if it's going to be less than 100 pounds at a time. If you have a good reputation of buying and selling tea, then you can get teas faster and often for a cheaper price.
If you haven't built a brand, then you're going to have to pay whatever it is that the wholesaler wants because there's virtually no reputation there. Tea Wholesalers and Bulk Ingredient Sellers are not going to spend much time and money for small accounts because they want volume. In short, if you want a better cost on your tea, then you need to sell a lot of it quickly.
People in the tea industry want the specialty tea industry to grow. Tea Wholesalers and Bulk Ingredient Sellers want specialty teas and herbs to grow. Tea Companies that go after new customers that didn't exist before (not taking tea consumers from different brands but converting energy drinkers or people who have never been introduced to high-quality teas) will be significantly more attractive to wholesalers, and they're going to give you a better deal.
